Dragon Ball Z (ドラゴンボールZ Doragon Bōru Zetto?) (usually abbreviated by the fans as DBZ) was an anime production displayed by Toei Animation. The story of the anime is based on the manga series Dragon Ball written by Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball Z and corresponds to volumes books 17 to 42 of the manga that was published in the journal , Weekly Shonen Jump, from the year 1988 to 1995. The animation series debuted in Japan on Fuji TV on April 26, 1989, and has ended on January 31, 1996 featuring 291 episodes displayed. On the strength of its success, the series has been displayed in over 80 countries around the world and dubbed .in several countries around the globe, including the United States, Australia, Europe, India and Latin America
The success of the first series written by Akira Toriyama has led to the creation of the sequel, Dragon Ball Z, and being one of the best known animes of all time. This series appears full emotion and live action scenes like fights and features several important philosophical themes as death, reincarnation, respect and so on. In first series, the stories had a more humoristic atmosphère and and was more considered as a comedy than a fighting anime. New series this time, displays a more serious atmosphere than its previews one. Dragon Ball Z possesses several episodes in which the suspense is so intertwined with events that at first do not seem to have much relevance, or of facts unnoticed and revealed in greater detail at the height of such an event.
The popularity for the Dragon Ball Z series has generated numerous special releases that represented a big added non-canon content in the Dragon Ball universe; for example, we can name:

- 148 video games on several consoles and many of them being released only in Japan, and a series of soundtracks from this material.
Also, Dragon Ball Z remains a cultural icon through numerous adaptations, including a more recent remastered broadcast entitled Dragon Ball Kai.
